Biography:
Benjamin "Ben" Grimm, also known as the Thing, is a central character in the Fantastic Four. Adapted for screen in several movies, the Thing is most recognizable for his orange, rock-like exterior and gruff demeanor.
Ben Grimm was originally a skilled pilot and close friend of Reed Richards. Exposure to cosmic radiation during an experimental space flight initiated by Richards caused Grimm's transformation into the Thing. This grotesque mutation granted him superhuman strength and durability, but at the cost of his human appearance.
The Thing's appearance varies across cinematic interpretations but generally retains the orange, rocky skin. Due to the expensive nature of special effects, characters in the Thing role have been interpreted by actors, with the special effects added to create the BigFig appearance.
He first appeared as the Thing in Fantastic Four #1 (November 1961). The Thing has proven an enduring presence in media.
